Connecting an Epson TM-30 Receipt Printer to the Register App

How to connect an Epson TM-30 receipt printer to the Register iPad app, reprint receipts, and connect a cash drawer to the printer.

Written by Tyler Tanner

Overview

This article walks through connecting an Epson TM-30 receipt printer to the Register app on an iPad, as well as optionally connecting a cash drawer to that printer.

Important: This process applies specifically to the Epson TM-30 (model M243B) and is only possible using the official Register iPad app on iOS. Connecting a receipt printer this way is not supported on the web register website.

Part 1: Put the Printer Into Bluetooth Discovery Mode

Before the iPad can find the printer, you need to put the printer into discovery mode:

  1. Turn on the iPad and plug in / power on the receipt printer.

  2. Open the paper hatch on the printer.

  3. Press and hold the feed button for about two seconds, until the orange feed light begins to blink.

  4. Close the paper hatch. A small sheet of paper will print out asking you to select a mode.

  5. Give the feed button one quick tap, then press and hold the feed button for another second or two until paper prints out listing details like the printer's IP address.

The printer is now in Bluetooth discovery mode.

Part 2: Pair the Printer in iPad Settings

  1. On the iPad, go to Settings and open Bluetooth.

  2. The Epson printer should appear in the list of available connections.

  3. Select the printer to pair it with the iPad.

Part 3: Connect the Printer in the Register App

  1. Open the Register app on the iPad.

  2. Tap the company name in the top right.

  3. Tap Manage Hardware.

  4. Tap the option to connect an Epson printer.

  5. The printer should appear in the list of available options. Select it.

  6. You'll be asked whether to connect it as a ticket printer or a receipt printer. Choose the option that fits your needs.

Once connected, every transaction you run will print a receipt automatically.

Reprinting a Receipt After a Transaction

If you ever need to print a receipt after a transaction has already taken place:

  1. On an iPad connected to the receipt printer, open the order in the Register app.

  2. Go to the Payment History section of the order.

  3. Click the three dots (ellipsis).

  4. Click Print Receipt.

Connecting a Cash Drawer

You can connect a cash drawer to your setup as long as the drawer has the capability to be hard-wired into the receipt printer.

It's important to understand how the two work together: the receipt printer is the "smart" part of the connection — it sends the signal to the cash drawer to open when a transaction occurs. The cash drawer itself does not need to be any particular brand or model, as long as it can be plugged into the receipt printer.

Important — Watch the jacks: The receipt printer has two similar-looking jacks on it. One is for Ethernet connectivity and the other is for the cash drawer cable. Because the cable will physically fit into both ports, it's easy to confuse them. Double-check that the cash drawer cable is plugged into the correct jack.

Conclusion

Once your Epson TM-30 is paired with the iPad and connected in the Register app, receipt printing (and optional cash drawer operation) happens automatically with each transaction. Remember that this setup is exclusive to the official Register iPad app — it is not available through the web register.
