Gift Certificates

This article covers how to set up and manage gift certificates in Singenuity, including global settings, creating individual gift certificate types, and how customers purchase and redeem them.

Written by Tyler Tanner

Overview

Gift certificates in Singenuity are essentially sellable promo codes. When a customer purchases a gift certificate, the system automatically generates a unique code for them. That code is then entered at checkout to redeem the discount toward an activity booking.

Unlike gift cards, gift certificates are single-use and can only be redeemed toward activities — they cannot be applied to merchandise, photos, taxes, or fees. If you're looking for a flexible dollar-value option that can be used across the entire system, see the Gift Cards article.

Gift certificates are also a great option for donations — you can create an internal, zero-dollar gift certificate type and generate codes to send to recipients at no charge.

Note: When a gift certificate is created in the admin, Singenuity automatically creates a corresponding merchandise item with the same name. This is where taxes and fees for that gift certificate type are managed. See the Fees section below.

Accessing Gift Certificates

Navigate to manage.singenuity.com and select Products in the top menu. In the left-hand sidebar, click Gift Certificates.

This opens two tabs: Settings and List.

Part 1: Global Settings

The Settings tab controls how gift certificates behave across your entire operation. Configure the following toggles:

  • Sell Gift Certificates: Enables or disables the ability to sell gift certificates entirely. Turn this on to allow gift certificates to be sold.

  • Sell Gift Certificates Online: Determines whether gift certificates are available for purchase on your customer-facing booking website. If toggled off, gift certificates can still be sold internally by staff.

  • Collect Mailing Address: When enabled, customers will be prompted to provide a mailing address during the gift certificate purchase process.

  • Internal Description: A description visible only to your team in the admin.

  • Online Description: A customer-facing description that appears on the booking website when customers are browsing gift certificates for purchase.

Part 2: Creating a Gift Certificate

Navigate to the List tab and click the blue + New button to create a new gift certificate type. You can have as many different gift certificate types as you'd like (e.g., "Zipline for One", "Zipline for Two", etc.).

General Settings

  • Enable Toggle: Turns the selling of this gift certificate on or off. When disabled, this gift certificate type will not be available for purchase.

  • Internal Use Only: When toggled on, this gift certificate can only be sold by staff internally and will not appear on the booking website.

  • Name: The name of the gift certificate as it will appear internally and to customers (e.g., "Zipline for Two").

  • Price: The purchase price of the gift certificate.

  • Advertised Price: An optional custom display price shown to customers on the booking website. This field accepts HTML, so you can apply formatting such as strikethrough, bold, or italic text.

  • Internal Description: A description visible only to your team.

  • Online Description: A customer-facing description shown on the booking website during the purchase process.

  • Image: Upload an image to represent this gift certificate on the booking website.

Maximum Guests Per Order

This setting controls the maximum number of guests the generated code can be applied to at checkout. A few important things to be aware of:

  • Gift certificate codes are single-use. If a code has a maximum of 4 guests but is applied to a booking of only 2, the remaining 2 guests are forfeited — the code cannot be used again for the remainder.

  • The maximum participant value set per rate (configured below) cannot exceed the Maximum Guests Per Order value.

  • If multiple rates are configured with the same maximum participants value, the greater discount will be applied. If discount values are equal, the code applies to rates in the order they appear in the cart.

Duration & Restrictions

  • Duration: When toggled on, choose between Appointment Date (the date of the activity being booked must fall within the set range) or Booking Date (the order must be created within the set date range).

  • Days of the Week: Select which days of the week the code can be applied.

  • Time of Day: Restrict the code to a specific window of time during the day. Appointment date and booking date rules apply here as well.

Assigning to an Activity

Select the activity this gift certificate applies to. Once selected, you'll be prompted to enter either a percentage off or a dollar amount off per ticket, along with the maximum number of that ticket type the code can apply to. These values can differ per rate within the same activity.

Click Save Changes after configuring the discount amounts.

Part 3: Viewing Generated Codes

Once a gift certificate type is live and customers begin purchasing it, each individual gift certificate type has a Codes tab. Here you can see:

  • All codes that have been generated

  • Whether each code has been redeemed or not

  • The order number the code is attached to

  • The date the code was created

Part 4: Taxes & Fees

Because Singenuity creates a corresponding merchandise item for each gift certificate type, taxes and fees for a gift certificate are managed through that merchandise item. For help applying taxes and fees, refer to the Taxes & Fees article.

The Customer Experience

  1. A customer visits your booking website and purchases a gift certificate.

  2. They receive two emails: a purchase confirmation and a separate email containing their unique gift certificate code.

  3. To redeem the code, the customer adds their desired activity to the cart on the booking website. At the end of the checkout process — just before payment — there is a field to enter a promo code or gift certificate code.

  4. If the code is valid and the booking meets the configured rules, the discount is applied automatically.

Conclusion

Gift certificates are a powerful and flexible tool for selling activity-specific discounts online or internally. Because they function like promo codes under the hood, many of the same rules and logic apply — for a deeper look at promo code settings, see the Promo Codes article.
